Art in the City
Creative juices are flowing in Virginia's Richmond Region. From small galleries to large and ever-expanding museums, you're bound to be awed by the area's impressive collections and talent.
The Region is also rich in theatrical, musical and dance performances including local and national theater companies, the Richmond Ballet, Latin Ballet of Virginia, Richmond Symphony and Virginia Opera. Some suggestions include:
Virginia Center for Architecture - Get oriented to historic Monument Avenue at this newly-opened center, housed in a 27,000 square foot mansion designed by famous architect John Russell Pope. The Center features architecture-related exhibits and an impressive gift shop.
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts - You'll find the largest art collection in the Southeast as well as the largest public display of Faberge Russian Imperial eggs outside of Russia. Original works by Monet, Cassatt, Lichtenstein and Warhol also are displayed at the first state-supported art museum in the United States. The museum began a major three-year expansion in 2005, which will enlarge gallery and educational spaces, create a four-acre sculpture garden and enhance visitor amenities.
First Fridays - Art galleries on and off Broad Street downtown open their doors the first Friday night of every month (except July and August) to unveil new exhibits and encourage exploration of all the areas galleries.
Art Works - Similar to First Fridays, Art Works hosts new shows and meet-the-artists receptions the fourth Friday of each month. Other times, you can enjoy special art shows and see artists at work at this Hull Street gallery.
