City Point (today's Hopewell) served as General Grant's headquarters during the Civil War Siege of Petersburg. Seven hospitals there administered most of the care for the injured and mortally wounded. Casualties were originally interred in burial grounds near the hospitals. Later they were re-interred at City Point National Cemetery. More than 5,200 Federals are buried there, including at least 1,000 African-Americans who died fighting for the Union. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Open daily sunrise to sunset. Free admission.
