The development of this National Historic Landmark began in 1890 with the unveiling of a monument to Gen. Robert E. Lee. Since then, Richmond has erected statues for three Confederate leaders and, in the mid-1990s, for tennis champion and philanthropist Arthur Ashe Jr.
