Richmond Ballet: Romeo and Juliet

Carpenter Theater 7 p.m.

The greatest love story ever told is brought to life through Malcolm Burn’s passionate choreography – originally created for The Royal New Zealand Ballet and brought into the Richmond Ballet repertory in 1995 – and Sergei Prokofiev’s soaring emotional score. William Shakespeare’s masterful play set in Verona, Italy is known by the world over for the powerful duel between the overwhelming emotions that rule the human soul: love and hatred. Propelled by a series of events that ultimately consume the storyline’s two young lovers – Juliet Capulet and the son of her family’s sworn enemy, Romeo Montague – the bard’s tragic tale has proved fertile ground for artists of all trades for centuries, with popular renditions performed by ballet companies across the globe.

WRIR's 10th Annual Party to Celebrate Heartache and Love Gone Bad

Gallery 5 7 p.m.

If you are a lonely heart, a misanthrope, or even a happy person who enjoys great music while in the company of the brokenhearted, then WRIR’s Black Valentine’s Day Party is just what the love doctor ordered.

Three great performers, Adam Eubank, Vexine and Imaginary Sons, will exclusively perform songs of love gone terribly wrong. These are songs that speak to love unrequited, betrayal, despair, and hearts torn asunder… the horrible emotions that make life worth living. Your favorite WRIR DJs will be on hand to spin songs of romantic woe between sets. This year’s party will also mark the return of the Black Valentine’s Day live Date Auction! Each winning bidder will walk away with an eligible date and a dinner for two at one of Richmond’s finest restaurants. And should romance bloom, don’t blame us when it all comes crashing down in a fiery wreck. You should have seen that coming.
