With nearly 60 public parks and 4,000 acres of green space, Chesterfield County offers unlimited opportunities for visitors and residents to enjoy outdoor recreation and leisure. The county is home to many athletic complexes making Chesterfield County a perfect place to host major sporting and athletic events.

The Dutch Gap Conservation Area is considered one of the best birding sites on the East Coast and includes nesting bald eagles and a heron rookery. The James and Appomattox rivers are among the most historic rivers in the United States. Artifacts found along the James River date back 11,000 years. The waterways played important roles in the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Today they continue to be an important part of the county's economic development and recreational splendor.

Pocahontas State Park, one of the top 10 campsites in the country, is located in the center of the county and includes 7,724 scenic acres. The Heritage Center and amphitheater complex  hosts meetings, conferences, concerts and special events. Other amenities include a swimming pool, boating, bicycling, hiking, and individual and group camping. The First Tee Chesterfield is located in Harry G. Daniel Park at Iron Bridge and includes an 18-hole golf course, driving range with practice areas and a three-hole/par-three practice course. With a special emphasis on youth, the facility provides affordable access to golf for all ages.

Other attractions include the Metro Richmond Zoo where many animals are displayed in natural habitats. The 300-year-old Swift Creek Mill has been preserved as a Virginia Historical Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
