Sheila Holland Artist Statement
“Painting with texture is intriguing to me. I have experimented with several textures through the years, but have found one that seems to evoke the appearance of what I seem to be searching for at the present time. I am fascinated by the undulating planes of color, that through the simple contrasting shapes, create an overall distant appearance similar to a fresco. At a closer inspection of the surface, you start to see the integral properties of the texture, which in this case, is eggshells.
I began using eggshells in my paintings about 10 years ago as a new outlet for my texture compulsion. I crush them and add them onto my freshly gessoed canvas, followed by a final layer. When dry, I then begin my background layers of color and painting. This eggshell texture seems to lend well to large planes of color instead of minute details that seem to disappear within the texture.." - Sheila Holland
