About
At 2 p.m., Sunday, October 27, 2024, the Richmond Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will dedicate a historical marker commemorating the heroism of 16-year-old Susanna Bolling who, at great personal risk, snuck through enemy lines and rode through the night to warn General Lafayette of British plans to capture him. Her selfless act allowed Lafayette to escape the trap and continue the campaign that led to the decisive American victory.
The ceremony, featuring the Virginia SAR Color Guard (all dressed in Revolutionary War period uniforms), will be held at the Half Way House, where Lafayette was quartered. Multiple Virginia SAR, DAR and other historical organizations, along with Bolling descendants, will be on hand to commemorate Susanna’s bravery.
The event is particularly poignant as we enter the 250th anniversary of the events leading up to and achieving American independence. October 27 also marks the 200th anniversary of Lafayette’s visit to Richmond on his 1824 U.S. tour.
The public is invited to see this colorful and dignified ceremony.
Directions: The Half Way House is located at 10301 Jefferson Davis Highway, North Chesterfield, VA 23237 - just north of the intersection of Routes 1 and 288.
The Richmond SAR thanks the Half Way House and author Libby McNamee for their support in planning this event and the Knight-Patty Fund for helping make this commemoration possible.
