Quasi-Freedom: Henrico's Register of Free Blacks

In the first three decades after the Revolutionary War, Virginia ranked first with the largest free Black population. To monitor this population, Virginia law required each free Black person to register in their locality. Much of Henrico's register survives and reveals the little known history of this group of people.
