Alexandria National Cemetery

One of the 12 sites established by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 to serve as military burial grounds. Ou tof the 3,533 Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery, 229 were African Americans, the majority of which belonged to the United States Colored Troops. Many of these men were originally buried in Freedmen's Cemetery and later reburied here. Note: the dates on many gravestones do not reflect the date the soldier died, but rather the dates of re-internment here from Freedmen's Cemetery.
