Civil War Site Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park

This is the second-largest military park in the world, interpreting the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House. Begin your visit at the downtown visitor center. Some of the largest, costliest, and most important Civil War battles occurred in or near Fredericksburg, beginning with the fight here on December 13, 1862—a Confederate victory. After the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863, the victorious Confederates invaded the North but failed at Gettysburg. A year later, the Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House began a series of bloody encounters south to Richmond and Petersburg.
