Institute for Contemporary Art
The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University displays the art of our time and is free and open to the public, Tuesday through Sunday. The inaugural, site-wide exhibition Declaration will be on view through September 9, 2018. Subsequent exhibitions will open on October 17, 2018. Free public programming runs throughout. Our cafe, run by hometown favorite Ellwood Thompson's, serves breakfast, coffee, smoothies, raw juices, wraps, and salads beginning at 8:00 am, Tuesday through Sunday. The ICA is open late, until 8:00 pm, on Wednesday evenings and until 9:00 pm on the First Friday of every month. The ICA at VCU is housed in the Markel Center, a state of the art building designed by Steven Holl Architects specifically for the presentation of contemporary art. The Markel Center was designed to be Gold LEED-certified in keeping with VCU's commitment to sustainability and sustainable practices.
