Institute for Contemporary Art
The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University displays the art of our time and is free and open to the public, Tuesday through Sunday. Artworks and exhibitions showcasing artists from around the world rotate through our four galleries and common spaces regularly, with related programming and events open to the public. Our cafe, run by hometown favorite Ellwood Thompson's, serves breakfast, coffee, smoothies, raw juices, wraps, beer, and wine Tuesday through Sunday. Our galleries, shop, and cafe are open late, until 8:00 pm, on Wednesday evenings and until 9:00 pm on the First Friday of every month. Our building, the Markel Center, was designed by Steven Holl Architects specifically for the presentation of contemporary art and was completed in 2018. The Markel Center is a LEED Gold-certified building, in keeping with VCU's commitment to sustainability and sustainable practices. Come see us! Admission is always free.
