The Model Tobacco Factory has long been a famous landmark on U.S. Route 1 near the southern entrance to Richmond. This Art Deco–style building is being converted into apartments. The Model Tobacco Factory complex includes the main factory building, a power plant, and tobacco warehouses and other service buildings. Robert Vale Faro, of the Chicago architectural firm of Schmidt, Garden, and Erikson, designed the principal buildings for the United States Tobacco Company. Located on the highway, the building has been a landmark for motorists ever since it was completed in 1940.
