Route 1 becomes the Roosevelt Skyway (heading south) as it zooms around the northwest edge of the Philly and across Cobb’s Creek, where the name changes to City Avenue. The Philly skyline appears on your left, but there is no chance of pausing to get a picture. If you are into rush hour the traffic will be heavy. The road passes through leafy upscale northwestern Philly suburbs with names like Bala, Cynwyd, Penn Wynne, Merion, and Media. Beyond the Philadelphia suburbs, Route 1 becomes the Baltimore Turnpike and takes a fairly westerly course through Chester, Chester Heights and into Chadd’s Ford, site of the Brandywine Battlefield Park.
