The Great Outdoors in the Richmond Region
It’s one big natural playground
When kayakers ride straight through the middle of your downtown, you know you’re a great place for the outdoors. Here, the James River rules, with rafting, whitewater kayaking, swimming, tubing and guided tours. Richmond’s Dominion Energy Riverrock is the country’s largest outdoor music and sports festival -- it takes place every May on Brown’s Island along the banks of the James (5k mud run, anyone?) Prefer to stay dry? Head out on a bike tour or to a Virginia State Park for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking. Scroll down for more.
There's something to do in the great outdoors year round in the Richmond region. Looking for an adrenaline rush: whitewater kayak or raft on the nation’s only class IV urban rapids or hit the James River Park System and Pocahontas State Park trails on a mountain bike. Grab a costume and run during Richmond’s Biggest Block Party, the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. Or go on a guided bike tour of street art and the river.
