VUU was founded in 1865 to give newly emancipated slaves an opportunity for education and advancement. Today, this HBCU is leading the way in areas like liberal arts, education, research, science, technology, continuing education, civic engagement and international experiences. VUU is also home to Museum Art Galleries with an impressive collection of African, New Guinea and African American art and artifacts.
