HISTORY IN THE RICHMOND REGION
Milestones of the American story
The events that shaped who we are as a country all part of the experience of visiting this region. Captain John Smith and Pocahontas. Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. Hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans came through here. In the Civil War, blocks and blocks of our city were burned to the ground. This is the region of Edgar Alan Poe, Arthur Ashe, civil rights activism and “give me liberty or give me death.” Historic markers line city streets and country roads, 13 Civil War battlefield sites dot our landscape and hundreds of historically significant buildings and homes stand ready for you to see.
This is a place to take in, to learn, to try to understand, and to gain perspective. It’s a place like no other, where you can witness the evolution of who we are as a people and see how revelation has inspired change. Come make our history part of yours.
