Civil War & Emancipation

In the Richmond Region

Richmond VA is a place where the Civil War and Emancipation are remembered and carefully studied, and where stories and sites are preserved for each new generation. The 19th century's Union troops cried on their conquest, "On to Richmond!" and it’s an invitation for you to explore some of the nation’s most authentic historic sites, artifacts and personal stories.  The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar is the perfect starting point. Tour the Museum and White House of the Confederacy, the Manchester Slave Trail and numerous battlefields. Walk in the steps of Abraham Lincoln, who visited Richmond just 10 days before his assassination. See this painful part of our nation’s history from three perspectives -- Confederate, Union and African American.
